A St Heliers Bay local resident celebrated their 21st anniversary this summer - the Stroke & Stride series of swim- run events has been swum and run on the local beaches and pohutakawa-lined footpaths, and has grown into the most popular after-work sports event in New Zealand. Each summer season sees eight events being contested midweek on a fortnightly basis, staying in step with the necessary high tide.
Each event involves a sea swim followed by a road run on the waterfront, allowing scores of locals to enjoy a regular form of healthy outdoor exercise progressing through the summer months, making the most of Auckland's magnificent harbour and the beaches on their doorstep.
All events are over distances that are achievable for various ages, with the only requirement being competency in swimming and running. At the same time Stroke & Stride offers excellent competition for the top athletes, with New Zealand's best often being challenged by the international stars in town! The short duration of the events makes an interesting spectacle for spectators wanting to see some high calibre action. All competitors are in the draw to win the $50 000 in prizes from the sponsors.
Competitors return in droves every year - the event has steadily grown in numbers. The people competing are all shapes and sizes and walks of life, but all with a good frame of mind because they know theu are doing something positive for themselves. You can't beat the atmosphere - you kick off and the sun's out and then as the race is finishing the sun's going down over Rangitoto, the water is sparkling and the pohutakawas flowering. Auckland's residents are so fortunate to have a city built around the edges of one of the world's most magnificent harbours. To have the beautiful St Heliers Bay as your playground is truly a treasure!
