Collection: Claudia Aalderink

Claudia Aalderink is an artist based in Kihikihi, New Zealand. 

Her works are created by meticulously fragmenting discarded beehives in a non-symbolic approach. Within a reduced visual vocabulary of circles, squares, rectangles, and lines, she explores the subtlety of colour, scale, and composition.

Claudia creates original artworks from the beautiful, weathered boxes and has fallen in love with the process of burning the wood. This concept has developed from the idea to create a contemporary black piece. Because there are no black boxes available due to the chance of overheating the beehive, she decided to char the wood.

Claudia continues to explore the textural qualities of the charred discarded beehive wood in combination with introduced elements creating a new identity from the weathered boxes.
 
"Each piece has their own story, and I love the honesty of the material. "I don't hide any of the 'scars' created over time. They merely add to the outcome of a piece".
