Gardens (as well as paintings) are about human attempts to control our environment. This painting was prompted by flying into Tāmaki Makaurau from the south and seeing the evidence of human habitation laid out on like a tapestry below - houses, gardens and fields nestled in the bush. A fragile co-existence.
